Terry Williams - Author / Speaker

Nine years as a professional speaker, twenty years as a corporate trainer and a working lifetime as a manager and salesman of products, services and ideas gave Terry a lot of experience and success in positively influencing the lives of others. His book 'THE GUIDE' was acclaimed in 2008 as a platform for people to reach the young people in their lives that they wanted to influence for the better. With the book still flying off the shelves, audiences are demanding not just influential content but content about influencing. How can anyone increase their influence over others without being manipulative or obvious? Given that demand, that content is what Terry is delivering.

Terry Williams - Trainer / Facilitator

Having worked his way up the ranks of the sales force, he started out as a trainer with State Insurance in 1990, moving into an I.T. project as a business analyst and from there into the New Zealand Lotteries Commission and later into management at North Shore City Council. Lotto franchises operate in a wide range of retail outlets and he was exposed to, and involved in, the spectrum of the kiwi retail experience. He loved being a trainer and helping people help themselves. Being a manager and business owner enabled him to have a greater involvement in broader organizational development but you’ll see the spark of passion in him when he's in front of the room helping learners learn and, even more importantly, transferring that learning into practical, tangible and measurable results in the workplace.

He plays and loves basketball, is a bit of a gym rat and devotes most of his non-working time to being as super a Dad as he can be. You might also see him in a comedy show near you but that’s a whole different story…

Terry Williams - MC / Comedian

If you're organising an event to set goals, solve problems, celebrate success or launch a product, then you want that event to inspire your people, have them talking about it afterwards and energised to achieve their goals. Maybe you're organising a gathering to present dry or complex information and your people really need to 'get' it? Terry Williams hosts such events, grabbing attention before and between your business presentations so your people listen, retaining your key messages and information. He doesn't just introduce speakers and thank the caterers for bringing a plate. He adds value, influencing the state of your audience with a series of fun interactivities to optimise the environment for you and your speakers.

Terry has a degree in history and a post-graduate degree in management, but his trade is as a trainer. His view is that the techniques of training and learning are the most useful management skills. On the comedy side, he finds it all the more powerful if a funny story can weave some learning within the entertainment.

Manager Customer Relationships for an organisation of 800+ people
Implemented the Actionline call centre, finalist for tuanz call centre of the year award 2001 and 2003
Bachelor of Arts (History) Canterbury 1987; DBA (Management) Massey 1996
Performed alongside the best current New Zealand comedians including Paul Ego, Jeremy Corbett, Mike King, Michele A'Court, Brendhan Lovegrove, Mike Loder, Jeremy Elwood

Terry's not just a comedian who entertains business people. As Manager Customer Relationships for an organisation of over eight hundred people, He's proven he understands business. As a comedian, he creates sophisticated and relevant comedy for corporate crowds and performs it with empathy. Often used as a motivational writer or speaker, he's strongly differentiated himself with thinking comedy. Or, if you wish to be witty and charming yourself but your lack of wit and charm (or time) is balanced only by a large discretionary income, you could hire him to be witty and charming on your behalf. He already ghost-writes humourous articles for professional journals, presentations for conferences and speeches for events. (He'd mention names but they also pay for discretion.) You'd be surprised. He's even had a chapter published in a book in Norway but you probably already knew that.

He thoroughly researches your organisation, industry or topic. He uses interactive training techniques, humour and storytelling to present his findings and key points, in person and / or in print. Terry often uses his own customer service operation as a case study. He delivers a stimulating balance of sound content, real-world experiences and a re-energised audience. Or if you just want a stand-up comedian, he does that too. You're the customer!

Terry's gained skills as a comedian that he's found beneficial in the real world outside comedy. These include communication skills, rapport building, self-confidence and quick thinking. Now he helps people in business learn from his serious comedy experiences without even having to get on stage.

He was born the year Sergeant Pepper was released by the Beatles and he appreciates that album a whole lot more now than he did then. A South Island lad working his way up the country, he's sold building supplies, driven forklifts, sold insurance, played National League Basketball, developed business analysis models, married, trained retailers, managed call centres, had two kids, worked with politicians and managed tourism operations. Staff, budgets, change projects, outsourcing - these things he's dealt with. On special occasions he does zip into the nearest phonebox and become Super-Presenter. (Vulnerable only to kryptonite and the high cost of parking at, or near, most inner city conference venues.)

As well as his management and life experience, he has oodles of comedic credentials:

Nominated 'Gag of the Year' 2008 NZ Comedy Guild Awards for 'South Auckland Americans.'
Winner 'Best gag' and on winning team at the 2009 Manukau Festival Celebrity debate: 'That Manukau is the new black.'
Produced and performed in several Fringe and New Zealand International Comedy Festival shows including The Stand-Up Show with Mike Loder in 2002 and 2003, The NZ Comedy Dogs in 2002 and 2003, A Loving Husband And Devoted Father Of Two in 2003, 360 Degrees and Killer Comedy in 2004, and Stand-Up For Orewa in 2005.
Opened Nelson Arts Festival September 2004 with a sell-out crowd
Performed over 350 live comedy gigs in Australia and New Zealand since 2001, including many at The Classic, New Zealand's premier home of live comedy.
Writer for radio comedy The Bellamy Report
Writer for radio comedy Cab Ride To Destiny
Two comedy CDs featuring on Air NZ's Just For Laughs audio channel Dec/Jan 05 and Jun/Jul 05
Presented with the 2004 NZ Comedy Guild President's Medal
Secretary of the NZ Comedy Guild
Interviewed National Radio 7th September 2004
Regular columnist for The Ticket magazine
Articles published in the Sunday Star Times
Recorded a set for TV2's Pulp Comedy in 2003
Bit parts in NZ TV soap Shortland Street and US TV movie 'Ike'
Chapter published in a Norwegian book

Probably the best synopsis of Terry's style for those potential clients who may be reticent of trusting a comedian with their business event was from Roseta Jacobs of the Auckland University Centre For Professional Development who did trust Terry and referred to him as, "...very professional, respectful yet still hilariously funny."
